The things three boys are learning

The Covered Bridge 25/10/2010

Ethan – This bridge is made with wood but not real nails. There are only wooden nails to hold it together.

DSC06630

Ethan – Here is a close-up of the wooden nails. They are called pegs. They have square tops. The part that goes through the wood is like a round stick.

DSC06632

Ethan – Here is a picture of some boards with pegs in them. You drill holes in the boards, and then you put the pegs in the holes.

Painting Bike Helmets 21/10/2010

Ethan – I didn’t fit my old helmet, so we had to get a new one, but it was to plain, so I painted my helmet. It looks like spiderman.

Marlon – I painted mine too. Mine is blue, and Ethan’s is red.

A Walk with Friends 20/10/2010

Dad – We went for a walk behind the Guelph Lake Sports Fields with our friends Stephen and Evelyn.

DSC06678

Ethan – I saw a garter snake, and I said, “Look, a snake,” and then we chased the snake and Stephen caught it.

DSC06666

Marlon – I touched the snake.

Ethan – The bottom was smooth and dry, but the top was a little bit rough. It squiggled in my hands. When we let it go, it slithered slowly.

DSC06668

Ethan – We found some plants that had some bumps on them. When we opened up a bump, there was a little worm inside. It was a little bit white.

Marlon – I found a bump too. My stick had two bumps on it.

DSC06672

Ethan – I found a caterpillar on the ground. I was just looking on the ground, and I saw it. Dad said we couldn’t take it home (because we had nothing to carry it). It was really fuzzy.

DSC06700

Dad – Here is a link to some more pictures of our walk, and here is a link to some pictures of the scenery we saw.

Hermit Crabs 19/10/2010

Ethan – Uncle Cory got us two hermit crabs from the pet store. Hermit crabs are not smart. They walk right off of edges into my hand.

Marlon – I like to pick up the crabs.

Ethan – If you stay still enough, then they will walk on your hands.

Marlon – They live in our tank.

Ethan – Actually, they live in a little cave. The cave is a coconut with a door in it.

DSC06731

Ethan – They can eat anything. They are good scavengers. That means they eat anything they find. They like vegetables, but the vegetables have to be soft, and they have to eat special minerals. These are the special minerals in the little shell.

DSC06732

Ethan – This is a really good picture that I took (Ethan took all the pictures, actually). It’s a close-up picture. You can see the little pincers. The pincers are for picking up their food and for walking.

A Walk by the River 15/10/2010

Marlon – We rode our bikes down to the river. I grabbed a branch, and I climbed, climbed, climbed, and then I stood up, and then I couldn’t get down, so Daddy got me down.

DSC06597

Marlon – There were lots of crazy rocks (slag). They had holes in them. They’re a little bit metal. I put one on my helmet, then it fell down and scraped me on the back, but I didn’t cry.

DSC06590

Marlon – Some trees were turning into dirt.

Dad – They were rotting?

Marlon – That means turning into dirt, Dad.

Dad – I know.

Marlon – Plants were growing on the trees, but only little ones.

DSC06629

Marlon – Mushrooms were growing on some trees too. Mushrooms make trees into dirt.

DSC06605

Marlon – And bugs make trees into dirt too. The bugs make holes in the trees. The bugs did, did, dig, then they make holes.

DSC06621

Marlon – We took a picture inside a tree hole, but no bees were in there. The bees might sting you, and then you will cry.

The Blue Beetle Versus Homadron 12/10/2010

By Ethan

One day the Blue Beetle was attacking Homadron, the mutant Batman, because Homadron killed Blue Beetle’s brother. The real batman was attacking Homadron’s robot. The robot’s name was Combo. Homadron had a virus that made him a bad mutant, but he used to be Blue Beetle’s friend.

Homadron and Combo were in a skateboard park, and they were knocking all the people off their skateboards. Then Blue Beetle and Batman attacked.

Blue Beetle said, “Stop knocking people off their skateboards.”

Homadron said, “No, I like knocking people down.”

Blue Beetle said, “Attack.”

Then Spiderman came and wrapped up the bad guys. The web hit Homadron so hard that it killed the virus and Homadron turned back into a good guy. Then Homadron fixed Combo so that it was a good guy too.

All the superheroes went back to their base. They had a party with a triple-double-chocolate-chip-cake that had one hundred sprinkles and one hundred candies on it.

The end.

Fun with Leaves 07/10/2010

Marlon – We did raking at another house.

Ethan – Our leaves aren’t really falling down yet, but their leaves are really falling down.

DSC06564

Ethan – Then we jumped in the leaves.

Marlon – Then we raked the leaves up, and then we jumped again. We threw the leaves for a fight, and I won.

Marlon – Then I picked some red ones and some yellow ones for taking home.

Ethan – Mine were all red, but just a little bit orange.

Marlon – Then I squished the leaves flat with an iron. It got hot, and I didn’t touch it, because it will burn. We put a towel on the leaves so the leaves wouldn’t burn.

Ethan – We put the flat leaves on some sticky stuff (peel and stick laminate), then we put some more sticky stuff on top, but Dad cut the top piece too short. We ironed it again to stick it together.

DSC06579

Ethan – Then we cut them out, and I did one all by myself, and I was cutting closer to the leaf than Dad.

DSC06582

Marlon – I didn’t cut any out because dad said no sharp scissors. I put the leaves on the window with tape.

Taureg Food 06/10/2010

Dad – We decided to make some Taureg food when we were learning about the Taureg nomads.

Ethan – First you put this stuff (millet) in some water to do soaking. It’s kind of like cornmeal, but it’s round.

DSC06506

Ethan – Then we chopped some dates.

DSC06508

Ethan – Then we chopped some goat’s cheese. Goat’s cheese is my favourite cheese, because it tastes like goat meat.

Dad – Does it really taste like goat meat?

Ethan – No, I mean, beacuse it tastes like goat’s milk.

Marlon – I don’t like goat’s cheese because it’s sour.

DSC06511

Ethan – Then you mix everything together. Then you put some spices in (cloves and a little salt). Then you cook it.

Dad – We actually made way too much, so I added some flour and milk and eggs to the leftovers and made some really tasty pancakes the next day.

Wall Climbing 01/10/2010

Dad – Pappa Kathy bought Marlon and Ethan a session at The Grotto climbing gymn for Marlon’s birthday.

Marlon – I went climb, climb, climb, and the rope was holding me up.

Ethan – The rope is attached to a harness, and a lady (our friend Alyssa) was holding the other end.

Marlon – I went all the way to the top, and I got the red rock.

DSC06530

DSC06538

Ethan – I went on the wall a little bit, and then I went on the climbing rock. It’s really hard, because you’re a little bit upside down, but you don’t get to have a rope.
